Worth His Weight In Gold

BY Michael Hutchings

Wire MC — a descendant of the Gunbayngirri nation, New South Wales — is a musician, MC, beatboxer and B-Boy from the small rural town of Bowraville.

Wire was a mission boy, whose early music influences include his father and uncles' guitar playing. Introduced to hip hop in primary school, Wire and his cousins would break dance in the schoolyard and backyard. Their crew “Da Bowra Boys” went on to represent the “2449” postcode in school competitions and tear up other crews at the local bluelight discos.

Wire now represents his people, performing all over the country and overseas. He takes shows out to remote Aboriginal communities and beyond, using hip hop to provide positive energy and role models for Indigenous youth.

MICHAEL HUTCHINGS shot this series at the Waterloo housing commission in Sydney, which has a large Indigenous population. The photos emphasise that Aboriginal artists are working within and telling stories about the urban Aboriginal experience.
